How to use a Sewing Machine

Standard

This is our first video post and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. Today we’re going to show you how to thread and use your sewing machine. Our video is at the bottom of the page.

All brands of sewing machines are different so we tried to make the instructions basic enough that they could help most people but the best thing to do if you’re confused is to look at your manual that came with the machine. Once you know how to thread your machine you can do anything!

At our house my sister and I do what we call thread painting where we just take a piece of fabric and sew all over it making patterns with the thread. It’s a great way to practice “driving” your machine.
Here’s a picture of a thread painting my 3yr old sister just did. Check out the thread paintings of other artists by google searching “thread painting” and click on images. There’s some amazing work out there! You can do it too if you try!

I’ll do a tutorial soon on how to thread paint a specific image.

Thanks for reading and Happy Sewing!

  1. Do you have any specific recommendations for a good age to begin using a sewing machine?
What age did you girls start? I sure enjoyed the pictures and video on this post!

    • My sister who is almost 4 just started using the sewing machine and she makes thread paintings. It’s a fun way to learn how to drive the machine but you’re not really “making” anything but art. I started at 4 too but once I turned 5 I feel like I really started to get good at it. I learned how to make pillows and bags first and now am making skirts and tank tops with only a little help from my mom.
      Hope that helps,
